BACKGROUND
Building on the first and second World Tsunami Museum Conferences held in Japan in 2017 and 2018, UNDRR will organize the Third World Tsunami Museum Conference as a virtual event from Geneva on 5 November from 10:00 – 11:30 CET( Geneva time). The digital event will highlight the work of existing disaster museum experiences and promote the network of disaster museums in keeping the memory of past disasters alive.
This year’s conference will focus on the importance of preserving memories of past disasters for educating future generations on tsunami risk and will demonstrate how museums and testimonies of survivors can raise awareness and educate more at-risk populations, particularly in light of COVID-19.
ABOUT THE DIGITAL EVENT
The 90-minutes online event will be styled as a ‘TV-style event’ and will feature a range of high-profile panelists including Ms. Petra Nemcova, Tsunami survivor and UNDRR advocate; Ms. Mami Mizutori, Special Representative of the UN Secretary-General for Disaster Risk Reduction and Ms. Audrey Azoulay, Director-General of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO); H.E. Teru Fukui, Member of the House of Representatives in Japan, and representatives of six existing disaster museums who will discuss how museums contribute to keeping the memory of past disasters and apply lessons learned.
Celebrity TV anchor, Ms. Femi Oke, will moderate the panel discussion and will invite the audience to experience a virtual tour of two disaster museums and listen to the feedback from young people. The event will conclude with a short musical piece played by the violinist and UNESCO Ambassador, Mr. Eijin Nimura.
